SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., Jan. 24, 2026 — Crime in San Bernardino is hitting record lows, with homicides, robberies, aggravated assaults, and homicides down at least 25% since 2020. Chief of Police Darren Goodman said the San Bernardino Police Department’s recent technology investments — including Peregrine — are playing a role in this trend.
“We have to always look for ways to become more efficient without it always having to require more staffing,” Goodman told the San Bernardino Sun. “We can look at technology as a way to be force multipliers, so we can do more without always having to add more (personnel).”
The department uses Peregrine to integrate data from disparate systems, automate complex analyses of that data, and seamlessly share intelligence with partner agencies.
Before Peregrine, officers had to look up information in records systems, automatic license plate reader cameras, body cameras and jail management software — along with outside systems like those maintained by the Department of Motor Vehicles — one system at a time. Now, they can do it all with a single login and in one unified search.
“One of our detectives had gone out to the scene of a shooting and was talking to one of the witnesses, and the witness was able to describe the car,” Goodman told The Sun. “The detective was able to go on his phone and pull up the (automatic license plate reader) camera and he found the car. So from that, he was able to, from his phone, go to the DMV and run the license plate. From that he was able to get the registered owner information, which allowed them to have a photo.”
The witness confirmed the photo was of the person he had seen. Officers went to the suspect’s home and arrested him there.
Previously, “that detective would have had to go back to the office and try to do work-ups on his computer,” losing valuable time, Goodman said.
