Our team at Peregrine is made up of dedicated individuals with deep expertise in their respective fields, combining their knowledge to support public safety. We periodically showcase the core of our organization – the people who make it exceptional. This profile has been edited lightly for clarity.

Peregrine continues to grow with exceptional individuals who bring their diverse backgrounds and skills to drive our mission forward. Today, we're spotlighting one of our team members, Parul, a Backend Software Engineer. Here's a closer look at her journey at Peregrine through an interview that's been edited for clarity.

Tell us about your professional background.

I completed my undergrad in computer engineering at the University of Waterloo, where I had the opportunity to dive into various tech fields through six internships, ranging from product management to full-stack engineering, at companies like SAP, Microsoft, and BlackRock. After graduating, I wanted to tackle more challenging projects, leading me to join Wealthfront, where I focused on DevOps for three years.

What made you want to join Peregrine?

First, joining Peregrine allowed me to continue my passion in a new industry and make a bigger impact in an early-stage startup environment. I wanted to broaden my skillset, so when I saw a chance to do some really cool backend software engineering, I knew I could learn a lot and make an impact.

What sealed the deal for me was the team—Peregrine is home to some of the most dedicated and talented individuals I've ever met. The focus on mentorship, learning opportunities, and the impact of our work resonated with me deeply.

How would you summarize what you do at Peregrine?

As an engineer, I'm all about ensuring our platform's backend functions seamlessly. I use Python to orchestrate various backend operations, developing logic that powers the user-facing side of our applications. As is typical in a software role, my day-to-day involves a lot of coding, specifically focusing on backend features that enhance the overall functionality and user experience.

What's a cool technical project you've worked on at Peregrine?

In my first month at Peregrine, I had the opportunity to go on an exciting journey to spin up antivirus measures within our infrastructure. It required our services and containers to communicate effectively with our S3 offerings, ensuring that our client data remained secured and protected. While it's primarily an infrastructural task, it also involved substantial backend work to ensure data safety and platform integrity.

That work matters. Safety, security, and privacy are core tenets of what we do and how we build technology. We prioritize our customers’ security without compromise, and it meant a lot to spearhead the effort. I was grateful they put the faith in me to take on a big project and thus make a big contribution so early in my time here. And still today, Peregrine has consistently demonstrated that ownership is a cornerstone of best engineering practices, time and time again.

How is Peregrine different from other places you’ve worked?

I’d give Ben, Peregrine’s Co-Founder and CTO, a lot of credit for creating a people-focused engineering team. We’re laser-focused on first and foremost, the people on our team. A lot of places give employees ample support during recruiting or onboarding, but Peregrine has consistently shown up and put its people first.

Beyond that, our engineering team is able to maintain its culture during a time of real growth, and I give Ben a lot of credit for that, too. We’re empowered to do meaningful work today while looking ahead to predict the technical capabilities we’ll need to build to scale as Peregrine serves more state and local government agencies.

Lastly, I really appreciate our commitment to our customers. It's not sufficient to merely claim we're customer-focused – we're truly “customer-obsessed”. We've seen how our clients can leverage our platform to achieve meaningful results in the field. This devotion to customer-centricity motivates us to continually strive to better serve our customers every single day.

Last question. Give us some fun facts about you!

I've got a few fun height-related facts about me. 1) I love exploring and have visited 15 national parks! Recently, I summited Mount Whitney and reveled in our beautiful world at 14,500 feet. 2) I try to read my height in books each year. I'm only 5'1" but that stack of books is pretty high!
